How does individual therapy work?
Individual therapy, also known as one-on-one therapy, involves a person meeting with a trained therapist to address personal challenges, mental health issues, or emotional difficulties. The therapist provides a safe and confidential space for the individual to explore their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, with the aim of helping them understand and manage their issues more effectively, develop coping strategies, and work towards personal growth.
Various therapeutic modalities can be used in individual therapy, including:
• Person-Centered Therapy: Focuses on creating a supportive environment where clients can explore their feelings and self-perceptions.
• Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT): Helps individuals identify and change negative thought patterns and behaviours.
• Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): Combines cognitive-behavioural techniques with mindfulness strategies to address emotional regulation and interpersonal effectiveness.
• Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT): Encourages individuals to accept their thoughts and feelings while committing to actions aligned with their values.
• Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR): aims to alleviate distress associated with traumatic memories through guided eye movements.
• Systemic Therapy: Examines and addresses issues within the context of relationships and systems, such as family dynamics.
The choice of modality depends on the client’s specific issues and goals, with the overall aim of fostering personal growth and well-being.
